RSU 5 students are at risk of losing a stong school system built in the last five years around consolidation of services for our three towns. Freeport voters should be fully aware that if the RSU “divorces,” leaving Pownal and Durham to fend for themselves, students in all three towns will have fewer opportunities for educational programming, including gifted and talented and special services for those who qualify; fewer curriculum choices to engage students in meaningful, interest-based learning; and more limited after-school programs and athletics. All these losses, and no guarantee that one nickel will be saved – more likely your costs for education will escalate.
My hometown friends in Freeport, my former students from 26 years of teaching in town, and other residents of the community should all expect our schools to provide a quality education that meets the needs of all students. That is best accomplished by keeping RSU 5 intact for current and future students. I encourage all Freeport voters to cast your ballot against withdrawing from RSU 5.
