to hear Bennett
Paul Doucette of Gorham, president of the Greater Portland Chapter of the Maine Genealogical Society, said the society would hold its monthly meeting on Saturday, May 4, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 29 Ocean House Road, Cape Elizabeth.
Thomas C. Bennett, director of the Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland, will speak. Bennett will discuss the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor Archives Project. The topic will cover the beginning of the project, its goals “and what insight into our own ancestors’ lives can we garner from this kind of information, “Doucette said.
The meeting begins at 12:30 p.m. with a social time followed by Bennett’s presentation at 1 p.m. and a business meeting about 2 p.m.

‘Laughing Yoga’ Triad program
Gorham/Westbrook Triad will meet at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 10, at Mill Brook Estates, 300 East Bridge St. in Westbrook.
The program is a demonstration on “Laughing Yoga.” The public is welcome to attend.
Civil War photography topic
at library
Libby Bischof, history professor at the University of Southern Maine, will speak about photography during the Civil War at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at the North Gorham Public Library, 2 Standish Neck Road.
Bischof will give an illustrated talk, “Visualizing the Civil War – Homefront and Battlefield.” Her presentation will include information about well-known Civil War photographers Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and T.H. O’Sullivan among some lesser-known image makers.

Music commemorates Civil War veterans
Historians will hear a musical presentation about Gorham’s monument honoring the town’s Civil War veterans when Gorham Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 13, at the Gorham Saving Banks Operations Center on Gray Road (Route 202).
With his music written for the subject, the Rev. Dan Lakeman will be accompanied by flutist Sarah Sawin. Gorham’s monument is located on the University of Southern Maine campus.
The public is welcome.
Brush disposal Saturdays
Gorham Public Works Department, 80 Huston Road, will accept brush 8 a.m.-noon on two Saturdays, May 4 and May 18.
Brush is required to be in small quantities and no larger than three inches in diameter.

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on April 26 that the U.S. public debt was $16,756,644,393,707.05.
