GORHAM – The $32.4 million school budget Superintendent Ted Sharp unveiled Wednesday night in Gorham represents an increase of $1.2 million from this year’s spending plan.
Sharp rolled out his budget Wednesday in a workshop meeting with the School Committee. The School Committee will review Sharp’s proposal in an all-day budget workshop beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, in Gorham Municipal Center.
Sharp’s proposed budget would cut one teacher position, saving $68,000. But, Sharp said after Wednesday’s meeting, it’s unlikely a teacher would lose a job because three teachers planned retirements.
Gorham school officials expect the district’s state general purpose aid subsidy to increase $379,281 from $14.2 million to $14.5 million.
“As of this date, public school districts in Maine are still awaiting final confirmation of their respective subsidy allocation,” Sharp read from his letter to School Committee members.
Based on a $6 million assumed tax base increase for the town, Sharp’s budget would increase the property tax rate 35 cents for each thousand dollars of valuation.
