GORHAM – While many of us were hitting the malls doing some early post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping, a group of runners eschewed the long lines to take part in the 13th annual “Burn off the Turkey” 5K road race in Gorham on Saturday.
The race for the top overall spot was a close one, with 41-year-old Kyle Rhoads of Windham just edging out 16-year-old Jesse Orach of Gorham 16:58-17:05. Both times were well off the record pace of 15:09 set by Ethan Hemphill. Gorham’s Ryan Dyer was a close third, crossing the line in 17:12, while Saco’s Aaron Chelate was fourth with a time of 17:32.
While the men’s race was certainly a close one, it was a different story in the women’s race. Kristine Bean-Guaraldo, 34, of South Portland, was the first woman to cross the finish line, posting a time of 18:30. Christine Snow-Reaser, 44, of Dayton, was second with a time of 19:31, but she could take some solace in knowing that her course record of 17:34 was safe for another year.
Gorham’s Emily Hickey, 28, was the third woman to cross the finish line, posting a time of 20:11 and 13-year-old Adrienne Santoro of North Attleboro, Mass. was fourth in the women’s race, finishing in 21:17. Gorham’s Jennifer Rush was fifth overall, finishing in 21:55.
