Police chief is chamber speaker

Walkers’ golden anniversary
Norm and Reinette Walker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July with 70 friends and relatives at their lake home in Raymond. Reinette Walker is a Westbrook native.
Their daughters, Debra and Dr. James Georgitis; Linda and John Gregoire and children, Matthew and Nicholas Gregoire; and Michelle and daughter, Ericha Christensen also attended.
The couple repeated their vows in the flower garden with Geraldine Pallang officiating.
Merserves celebrate 50th
Carleton D. and Evelyn (Libby) Meserve, 400 Saco St., were honored recently on their 50th wedding anniversary by their children.They are Joanne Reece and her husband, Tom, and sons, Richard aand Barbara Meserve,and John and Valerie Meserve, all of Westbrook.
The Meserves were married on Aug. 3, 1957, in the Westbrook Congregational Church by the Rev. Herbert A. Stevens.
More than 100 guests of family and friends attended the celebration. Guests included members of the wedding party: Roland Meserve, South Portland; Suzanne Meserve Gokey, Portland; and Elizabeth Farwell Young, Elizabeth Libby, Catherine and Gorham Libby, all of Westbrook.
Carleton is retired from the Portland Water District and Evelyn is retired from the former Fleet Bank in Westbrook.
Goan earns Eagle Scout
Kyle A. Goan attained the rank of Eagle Scout Sept. 28 in a ceremony at the Stephen W. Manchester Post on Dunn Street.
Seventy family members and friends attended the ceremony. Goan, 17, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 83. He is the son of Greg and Nancy Goan.
Goan’s Eagle Scout project consisted of helping relocate the Westbrook Food Pantry from Lincoln Street to its new home in the old St. Hyacinth’s rectory. Goan, a junior at Westbrook High School, coordinated and oversaw work needed at the rectory to ensure a smooth transition. He organized all the cleaning, painting, asbestos removal, glass placement, carpeting and the transition of food.
He worked with the assistance of food pantry volunteers, city employees, other scouts and adults. The effort required as estimated 400 hours.
Goan is a member of the National Honor Society and swims for the Westbrook Seals and the high school team.
Artist reception at gallery
The public is invited to attend a reception for artist Tony van Hasselt, 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, at Westbrook Picture Frame and Fine Arts Gallery, 869 Main St.
Van Hasselt, a native of Holland, lives in Boothbay. Gallery owners Ken and Jan Atkinson said van Hasselt is an internationally renown water colorist and author. Van Hasselt, whose works have been featured in magazines, will have 14 art works on display and available for purchase.
“It’s an honor to have such a well-known artist display work in Westbrook,” the Atkinsons said.
Woman’s club to meet
Westbrook Woman’s Club GFWC/MFWC will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, in the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.
“Guest Day – Each One, Reach One” 2007 membership challenge will be observed. Members are asked to invite a friend.
Speakers will be Maine Federation President Gloria O. Leveillee and Westbrook Woman’s Club Membership Chairwoman Jean Anne Thomas. All women of the community are invited to attend. Ruth Joy, Mary Barton, Christine Bennett, Judy Bennett, Nancy Plaisted and Cleo Sherman are refreshment committee members.
Living Rosary at St. Hyacinth’s
The Sodality of St. Anne of St. Anthony’s Parish in Westbrook is sponsoring the seventh annual Living Rosary of Nations at 3 p.m. on Sunday, at St. Hyacinth’s Church on Brown Street.
The special event is for religious vocations and world peace. “The candlelight Rosary will be said in many languages by priests and parishioners representing many area parishes,” said Marilyn Foster, president of the Sodality of St. Anne.
Benediction of the most blessed sacraments will follow with the Rev. Reginald Brissette officiating. A reception will follow. For more information, call Foster at 854-1199.

Prides Corner Garden Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, at Prides Corner Church, 35 Pride St.

The local chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International will meet for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, at the American Legion hall, 17 Dunn St.

Completes training
Army Pvt. Dwane Duchaine Jr., a 2003 graduate of Westbrook High School, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, Duchaine received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare, bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice, basic first aid and field training.
Duchaine is the son of Holley Duchaine of Gorham.
