Universal Waste Disposal
Universal Wastes are wastes that contain hazardous materials such as mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and are commonly found in homes.
Examples of universal wastes are:
Laptops
Televisions
Computer Monitors
Automobile Batteries
PCB ballasts, found in old fluorescent lighting fixtures
Lamps – fluorescent, neon, mercury vapor are a few examples
Rechargeable Batteries
Mercury items are:
Thermometers
Thermostat Switches
Fluorescent bulbs
These items are not acceptable for curbside collection
Westbrook residents may dispose of computer monitors and televisions for a fee at the following locations:
Riverside Recycling Center, Portland, 797-6200
Pine Tree Rubbish Co., Scarborough, 773-1122
Residents are encouraged to dispose of old TVs and monitors with the vendor at time of purchasing a new unit.
Residents should call each site for any fees that may apply for the disposal of items.
Smaller waste items such as batteries, lamps and other mercury items listed above are collected during the annual Household Hazardous Chemical Collection Day held each September.
Note: The Public Services Club will not be collecting TVs or monitors during the September collection/drop off day.
