Seventy descendents of the Cater-/Decatur family gathered for the 132nd consecutive reunion in August at Walnut Grove Campground in Alfred.
Four sons of John Cater III started the family’s first reunion in 1875 on the old homestead in Barrington, N.H. It’s noted as the longest consecutive reunion in the United States.
Officers elected were Bruce Emery of Buxton, president; James Shack, Ayer, Mass., vice president; Debra Kleynen, Tewksbury, Mass., secretary; Wanda Emery, Buxton, treasurer; Priscilla Gallant, Old Orchard Beach, historian; and Jeanette Fernstrom, Buxton, assistant historian.
James Welsh, Limerick, genealogist, was thanked for updating family history.
Emery, president, called the business meeting to order. Gifts were given to several members – Florence Jones of Southbury, Conn., was the oldest; George Donald Gaudette of Brookline, Mass., 8 months, youngest; Beatrice Fisher, Grafton, Vt., most children with 10; James and Beverly Shack, Ayer, Mass., longest married, 52 years; and Allison Fernstrom and Vincent Certoma Jr., Fort Bragg, N.C., farthest away and have since married.
The family voted to hold next year’s 133rd reunion in Buxton at the home of Bruce Emery.
