Last weekend, the Westbrook High sports teams were in action one final time before the holiday break. The boys and girls basketball teams took on Biddeford; the ice hockey team traveled to Gray-New Gloucester; and the wrestling team battled some quality squads in a five-team meet at Deering.
The girls basketball team did something no other SMAA team has been able to do this season – beat Biddeford. The Blazes out-scored the Tigers 19-14 over the final eight minutes of regulation to earn a big 68-65 win.
The game was close throughout with Westbrook holding a 20-18 lead after one period. Biddeford fought back and grabbed a 39-34 lead at the half before the Blazes rallied to pull within two (51-49) entering the fourth quarter.
Cynthia Wescott was Westbrook’s high scorer with 19 points. Erin Murphy had a nice all-around game and she finished with 17 points. Kaylene Godwin contributed 12 points to the offense, Audrey Shutts chipped in with 11 and Lauren Sawyer added nine points for the 3-2 Blazes.
Westbrook is back in action on Tuesday at Thornton Academy as the regular season continues.
The boys basketball team improved to 2-3 with a 47-36 win at Biddeford on Friday. The Blazes jumped out to an early lead of 15-7 after the first quarter. They survived a scare as Biddeford stormed back to within three points at halftime.
The Blue Blazes calmly held off the Tigers and then stretched their lead to nine as they outscored Biddeford 11-5 in the third quarter. They kept the hosts at bay in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Westbrook got a much needed boost in the second half from Josh Harriman and Kyle Sanborn. Harriman scored six of his 12 points in the third quarter and Sanborn scored 12 points in the fourth.
Westbrook will resume the regular season schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 2, against Thornton Academy.
The Westbrook hockey team traveled north to battle Gray-New Gloucester on Saturday where they won a wild one, 4-3.
The Blazes scored the only goal of the first period and led 1-0 at intermission with Chris Marston scoring from Tyler Rand.
In the second period the Blazes took a 2-0 lead when Matthew Buotte scored early in the period on an assist from Doyle. Gray-New Gloucester then ripped off three straight goals to pull ahead 3-2. But with just 47 seconds remaining in the period, Joseph Cloutier got the Blazes even at 3-3 with another assist from Rand.
Marston scored his second goal of the game and what proved to be the game-winner at 5:29 of the third period to break the deadlock. The Blazes then held on for the win.
Zachary Joy had 21 saves to get the win in net for the Blazes.
Westbrook is now 3-2 and will resume regular season play Tuesday, Jan. 2, when they host South Portland.
The Blue Blazes wrestling team had a successful weekend as well. They traveled to Deering High School where they battled the Rams as well as Biddeford, Noble and Bonny Eagle.
The Westbrook wrestlers tied Noble 41-41, but defeated Deering by a 47-36 score. The Blue Blazes also edged Bonny Eagle 39-37 and they topped Biddeford 51-30.
