Kids turn up the heat in drive

Students at the Hanson School have fired up a school drive, collecting bottles and cans to help “Keep the Heat On” for needy elderly people in Buxton.

The kids are collecting returnable bottles and cans to help pay home heating costs. “Everybody brings in bottles. It’s really good because it helps people with heat,” said fifth-grader Cassidy Merrill, 10, about the kids’ drive. “It’s a very good purpose.”

Ed and Sharon Newell launched the program last year on Election Day in Buxton. The town’s selectmen administer money collected for the program.

A box in the lobby at Hanson School was overflowing with returnables Monday morning. Selectman Jean Harmon stops at the school each week and collects the donated bottles and cans to be redeemed. “She’s been very helpful,” said teacher Dolores White.

The students of Mary Semons and White initiated the drive, which has spread to other classes at the Hanson-Jewett elementary schools. “We’re taking time to help other people,” said Danielle Marshall, 10, also a fifth-grader.

The student drive began two weeks ago and they’ve realized results. “So far, we have $56,” Marshall said. “Almost everybody is chipping in, bringing in bottles.”

Since the program began last year, selectmen reported that $9,000 has been collected through donations, returnables and charity events along with a grant received from the Narragansett Number One Foundation. Returnable containers are being accepted on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the transfer station next to town hall on Portland Road. “We urge everyone to bring their returnables on voting day,” the selectmen said in a statement, thanking people for their generosity.
