A group of motivated Gorham and Standish 5th – 7th grade students have banded together to compete in the Maine First Lego League Robotics competition. The team includes Joseph Martin, Gareth Packard, Rachel Eaton, Abraham Eaton, Caleb Hasty, and Jonathan Tanguay. The team is coached by Jennifer Eaton, Dan Martin, Bill Packard, Mike Tanguay, and Matt Hasty.
According to the First Lego League website, FLL is a robotics competition for 9-14 year olds which is designed to “inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.”
The Gorham-based team chose the name Lego DISASTER. This is a very appropriate name because DISASTER can either stand for missions that do not go as planned or Do It Smarter And Simpler Than Enemy Robots. At different times, the team’s mission results represent both the meanings of DISASTER equally well.
On Saturday, December 1, the team will compete at Bonny Eagle High School against 39 other teams from the State of Maine. Out of a possible 400 points, the team hopes to earn 300. Their solid presentation and exceptional teamwork make Lego DISASTER a strong contender for a trophy.
