Kelsey Wilson scored three goals as Gorham went on the road and defeated Thornton Academy, 5-0, Saturday in a rain-soaked game.

The win keeps Gorham (8-0) undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the Western Maine Class A Heal Point standings. The loss closes out a 10-day stretch in which No. 6-ranked Thornton (4-4-1) played each of the top-five teams in the standings.

Thornton went 1-3-1 during the stretch.

“It’s a tough thing for anyone,” said Thornton coach Chris Kohl. “It’s just the way the schedule fell. We played well in parts. Gorham is a nationally-ranked team.”

The Rams are ranked No. 13 among high school teams in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). They are ranked No. 3 in New England behind teams from Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Saturday the Rams’ defense, anchored by senior sweepers Caitlyn Butterfield and Ashley Michaud along with goalie Luci Pike, was able to hold Thornton’s offense in check.

The Golden Torjans have displayed a balanced offense throughout the season with seven players scoring at last one goal. Jess Stewart leads the way with three, including the game-tying goal against No. 3 Cheverus (6-1-1) with six minutes remaining last Thursday.

Jordana Harrison, Amanda Higgins and Savannah Ribaudo have scored two goals apiece.

The Rams have not allowed a goal since defeating Scarborough, 3-2, on Sept. 6. They have outscored opponents 37-0 over their last six games.

“I think now the girls have a sense of pride about it,” said Gorham coach Jeanne Zarrilli. “They don’t want to be up a few goals and relax and let one in. They are starting to realize that they are playing for something more.”

Zarrilli added that she wants her team to be strong defensively going into the playoffs and that the Rams are continuing to play hard, trying to get everybody to understand how to work together defensively.

Despite the result, Kohl was happy with the way his team played against Gorham, but was unwillingly to single out any particular performance.

“My team plays up to the level of the competition,” he said. “They came out and they played hard. The weather contributed to some of the bounces. It was a team effort for us. We are all about team. I try and not single out kids too much. Today we obviously played well as a team.”

All three of Wilson’s goals came off her left foot. The first came in the 21st minute when she tapped in a knee-high cross, putting the Rams up, 1-0. Her final goal came with 9:47 to play on a shot just inside the left post.

“I am a right-footed player but I think I use more technique with my left foot,” Wilson said. “That’s why my shots look better. I know my right foot is supposed to be my power foot.”

Rachele Burns and Nicole Robitaille also scored for the Rams.

Thornton played Noble (0-6) Wednesday and will play at Westbrook (2-5) on Friday.

The Rams looked to continue rolling Wednesday against Bonny Eagle (2-4-1) and will be on the road against Biddeford (1-7) on Friday.
