Westbrook’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball all-star team will play in the Eastern regional tournament in Augusta beginning this weekend.

The team – with eight members from last year’s Westbrook squad that went all the way to the Little League World Series – won the state championship Monday in Skowhegan with a 7-1 win over Franklin County.

The winner of the regional tournament will advance to the World Series, to be played Aug. 17-25 in Hamilton, N.J.

The Gorham Babe Ruth softball 14-year-old all-star team will play in the national tournament Aug. 14-18 in Varina, Va.

Gorham advanced to nationals by winning the regional tournament in Stamford, Conn.

In the championship game Sunday, Gorham defeated Concord, N.H., 6-2. Lauren Fleury hit a two-run triple as Gorham broke a scoreless tie with a four-run fifth inning.

Kelsey Crowe and Mia McGill had RBI singles in the game, while Sara Burnheimer had a sacrifice fly.

Gorham was undefeated in the tournament, winning their first game Friday, 1-0, over Londonderry, N.H.

On Saturday Gorham defeated host-team and tournament-favorite Stamford, 1-0, in eight innings.

Annie Mitchell led of the eighth with a bunt single, advancing to second on an error. After Mitchell went to third on a passed ball, Crowe hit a bunt single and Chelsea Clark singled to second, loading the bases as Stamford’s defense played conservatively to keep Mitchell on third.

However, Lauren Chouinard hit a grounder up the middle, scoring Mitchell as the game’s winning run.

Crowe, who was Gorham’s MVP, struck out 17 in the game. She pitched the entire tournament for her team, allowing only two earned runs.

Later that day, Gorham defeated Concord in what would be a preview of the championship game, 4-2.

Coach Scott Burnheimer said it was Crowe’s pitching along with strong defense that allowed Gorham to stay in the winner’s side of the bracket and advance to nationals.
