A Buxton man pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges Tuesday at an arraignment hearing in York County Superior Court in Alfred.
Mark A. Coosard, 45, of Buxton was indicted by a York County grand jury this month on one Class C felony charge of cruelty to animals and six Class D misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals. Coosard was granted personal recognizance bail, but is prohibited from possessing pets or animals at his home, York County District Attorney Mark Lawrence said Wednesday.
Lawrence said that Coosard has been scheduled to appear for a hearing on Feb. 29 in York County Superior Court.
The charges stem from a seizure of animals by Buxton police on March 30 on Rose Ridge Way following a tip that two loose dogs appeared underfed.
Buxton officers found five dogs, one cat and several deceased animals in a feces-strewn trailer. Police said adequate food and water hadn’t been provided.
The animals were taken to the Emergency Animal Clinic in Portland and then the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook.
Thomas said last week a horse and a goat, which had sores on its back, were also seized. They were taken to the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals in Windham.
Deceased animals included several cats and dogs and one horse.
Chief Jody Thomas and Officer Mike Grovo were assisted in the rescue operation by then Buxton Animal Control Officer Alexandra Sanborn and Standish Animal Control Officer Jack Freitas.
