By the time Josh Maxwell made it to the high jump he’d already won three events at Monday’s track meet in South Portland.

Though the Gorham junior was edge by Red Riots senior Alex Gato in his fourth event, Maxwell’s 22 points helped the Rams top the field for the second meet in a row.

Gorham finished with 105.5 points, ahead of South Portland (92), Sanford (67.5) and Massabesic (24).

The defending Class B outdoor champs are holding their own in Class A competition, though quite a few pieces would have to fall into place for the squad to contend for the title at states this season.

“We’re decent in the throws and the hurdles, but other potential has to show,” said Rams coach John Wilkinson. “We’ve got some good kids, but we’ve got to blend it all together.”

Maxwell seemed to have little trouble winning the 100-meter dash, the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles.

“I did pretty well,” he said. “I did 40.6 in the 300 hurdles and that ties my personal record, which is nice.”

Andy Nash, Kyle Perkins and Jake Brown also had excellent meets for Gorham. Nash took the discus and finished second in the shot put; Perkins broke the tape in the 200m and was third in the pole vault; Brown finished first in the 800m and third in the long jump.

In addition, Brett Connolly was runner-up in the 110m hurdles, third in the 300m hurdles and fifth in the long jump, and Ryan Dyer was third in the mile and fourth in the two-mile.

The Rams’ 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams also won their races, while the 4 x 800 team finished second.

Gorham is scheduled to host a meet tomorrow (May 11) that features Portland, Marshwood and defending Class A outdoor champion Bonny Eagle. The first events go off at 3:45 p.m.
