WESTBROOK – The city of Westbrook has received bids on two small downtown house lots that it put up for sale in an effort to dispose of some surplus property

According to Bill Baker, Westbrook’s assistant city administrator for business and community relations, the city received three bids in total for the two adjacent, .19-acre lots located between Haskell and Rochester streets. Baker said that the Haskell Street lot attracted two bids and the one on Rochester Street received one bid.

The city had been seeking a minimum bid of $35,000 for each lot, and while Baker did not reveal the amount of the bids, he did say that “all exceeded the minimum bid requirement.”

The city has owned the lots for 11 years, acquiring the strip of land when the area was being developed for the nearby Public Safety Building.

Baker said the land now being sold was part of the old railroad right of way, and when that was abandoned by the railroad, the city acquired the land and subdivided it into two house lots.

Baker, City Administrator Jerre Bryant and Mayor Colleen Hilton will review the bids before bringing a recommendation before the City Council. Baker was not sure when the administration would bring the matter before the council.

“We are proceeding on a track to award these bids and get those properties back on the tax rolls,” Baker said.
