Third-seeded Portland scored early and often en route to a 9-1 win over second-seeded Gorham in last Saturday’s West A semifinal at Gorham. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the first, three more in the second, and they added another in the third to take a 6-0 lead into the fourth inning.
Gorham scored their only run of the game in the home half of the fourth, but they were unable to mount any kind of comeback against Portland pitcher Ryan Arsenault. The Rams did finish with nine hits on the day, but they couldn’t combine enough of those hits to add to their run total.
Senior pitcher Andrew Dean started on the mound for the Rams. Kyle Donaldson and Tony MacMillon came on in relief.
Joel Mundy, John Mitchell and Jamie Lamontagne all had two hits to lead the Gorham offense.
The Rams finish the season at 13-4.
Gorham 6 Westbrook 4
Gorham reached the semifinal round with a 6-4 victory over seventh-seeded Westbrook in a regional quarterfinal match-up on Thursday, June 7, at Gorham.
It was a scoreless game until the third inning when the Blazes grabbed a 1-0 advantage. The Rams answered in the home half of the third with three runs for a 3-1 lead. Westbrook inched closer with a single run in the fourth, but the Rams scored two in the fifth and another in the sixth for a commanding 6-2 edge.
Westbrook threatened in the top of the seventh, rallying for a pair of runs before the Rams stopped the comeback attempt.
Gorham’s Kyle Egbert knocked in three runs with a pair of hits. And Andrew Dean, Justin Grandmaison, Jon Dahms and Joel Mundy all added two hits each to pace the Rams’ 12-hit attack.
Grandmaison started on the mound for the Rams and he had relief help from Mustafe Hassanzada and Tony MacMillon.
Westbrook catcher Mike Tanguay led his team with three hits.
Westbrook 11 Windham 1
A nine-run sixth inning propelled the Westbrook baseball team to an 11-1 win over Windham on Wednesday, June 6, in a West A prelim game at Westbrook. The seventh-seeded Blazes moved on to face No. 2 Gorham (12-3) on Thursday, June 7, in a quarterfinal match-up.
Westbrook had lost a 14-2 decision to this same Windham team in the final game of the regular season. But last week, the Blazes combined a solid five-hit pitching performance from Christian Hamilton with a 13-hit attack from their batting order to top the Eagles and move on in the regional tournament.
Shane Kelly led all Westbrook batters with three hits while Lance Ludka, Shawn McAlpine and Mike Tanguay all added two hits each.
