Locals honor Brown

Cora L. Brown, 97, Portland, was honored at the Lincoln Day Dinner last month in Portland, according to former state senator Carolyn Gilman of Gorham, who said Brown is the “first lady of the Republican party in Portland and Cumberland County.”

Brown is retiring from active participation in the Lincoln Club after 73 years. The Lincoln Club, at 123 years old, is most likely the oldest Lincoln Club in the United States.

A former Gorham resident, Phil Stanwood, now of Biddeford, presented Brown with a plaque, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and two elephants engraved on each side with the words ,”To Cora L. Brown, with great appreciation of the service rendered to the Lincoln Club for the past 73 years.”

Brown received many other tokens of appreciation for her many years of service.
