Bonny Eagle 4
Massabesic/OOB 1
The Bonny Eagle hockey team unleashed 54 shots and got four goals from four different players to get by Massabesic/OOB 4-1 Friday night at Biddeford Ice Arena. Seastangs goalie Jeremy Corthell recorded 50 saves in the loss.
“Their goalie played well,” said Bonny Eagle coach Dave Petterson. “He takes a lot of shots. We had to focus on putting them in the right places or they won’t go in. He takes away the whole bottom of the net. We weren’t always in the right places, but we were there enough times.”
The Scots got on the board just 1:05 into the opening period. Travis Dunn took a pass from CJ Blanchard and skated into the attacking zone. He faked one way, then the other before getting the puck past Corthell with a backhander.
Corthell kept the Scots out of the net for the next 10 minutes. But the Scots struck again with just 2:23 to go in the first. Evan Jewell got the puck to Sean Walsh, who fired a wrist shot from the right circle to give Bonny Eagle a 2-0 lead.
“We kept the puck pretty much in control,” Petterson said. “We had some pretty passing plays coming out. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that stuff out of these guys. We’ve been one manning it a lot so when I see those tic-tac-toe plays I know they are capable of them, but they haven’t been doing it a lot. It’s good to see.”
The Scots still held a 2-0 advantage through most of the second period. Late in the period, with the Seastangs on the power play, Bonny Eagle struck again. Jewell stole the puck just inside the Bonny Eagle zone and skated away with it. His shot beat Corthell and gave the Scots a 3-0 lead.
“We thought we had the second period,” said Seastangs coach Dave Pasquarello. “It was 0-0 with a few minutes left but we made a mistake on the power play and they got that breakaway. That was a backbreaker right there.”
Kayle Hamilton scored the final Bonny Eagle goal of the night when he fired a slapper from the right face off circle that beat Corthell through a screen. It was the 96th point in Hamilton’s high school career as he tries to become the first Bonny Eagle defenseman to record 100 points.
The Seastangs got on the board midway through the third period when Jeff Elliott netted a well-timed pass from Everett Allen. But it was all they could get as the Scots cruised to the 4-1 win.
“Overall I’m pretty happy,” Petterson said. “We’re going into the playoffs and we’ll see what happens. This is the first time to win 15 (games), we’ve never done it before. Having lost seven last year, I didn’t think we would be where we are right now but the kids have stepped up well. I’m looking forward to where we are headed from here and see what happens when we run into the big boys.”
The Scots improved to 15-1 with the win. They were scheduled to wrap up their season on Tuesday against Marshwood. The Seastangs fell to 2-14-1 with the loss. They were scheduled to wrap up their season on Monday against Gray-New Gloucester.
“A lot has changed (this season),” Pasquarello said. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity. Our kids are stepping up; they are playing as a team. These guys are doing what we’re asking.”
