GORHAM – Improvements at the Gorham Public Safety Building, 270 Main St., are nearly complete with some painting and masonry work on hold until spring.

Town Manager David Cole said Tuesday the building has been re-roofed, dormers added and columns in front of the building have been repaired. “The cost will be about $340,000,” Cole said.

The project got under way in November. A Gorham company, Great Falls Construction, is the contractor. The remodeling increased space for staff in the building, which houses the police department and Gorham Fire and Rescue Department.

Great Falls Construction added two full dormers to the building to increase storage and emergency medical technicians’ living space by 500 square feet in one section and the other dormer will remain unfinished to create a future living space for the fire department.

The roof was updated from old asphalt shingles to a standing seam metal roof. The new roof will help reduce snow and ice build-up, prevent leakage and has a lifetime warranty, according to the company.

The building opened in 1974 as a new Gorham Municipal Center. It had replaced town offices in a brick building at 28 School St. that now houses Gorham Historical Society.

Town offices are now in the former Shaw School, 75 South St., which was renovated in 2006.
