Bonny Eagle 8

Massabesic/OOB 0

Kayle Hamilton and Travis Dunn each had three goals to lead Bonny Eagle to an 8-0 win over Massabesic/OOB Saturday at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham. Evan Spencer and Taylor Bishop added a goal apiece for the Scots.

The Scots wasted little time getting on the board. Just 3:59 into the game, Spencer grabbed a rebound in front of the net and backhanded the puck into the twine for the first goal of the game. Spencer’s goal would prove to be the only one Bonny Eagle needed.

“We started off slow,” said Seastangs coach Dave Pasquarello. We were flat. We had a whale of a game against Marshwood, 1-0 down there, almost had our first victory. But the kids were flat today.”

The Seastangs managed to keep the Scots at bay for most of the first period. With the score still 1-0, Dunn doubled the Bonny Eagle lead with just over four minutes to go in the period. Off a pass from Curtis Rowe, Dunn snuck the puck between Seastangs goaltender Jeremy Corthell and the pipes for his first goal of the game.

“He is so hard to play against,” said Bonny Eagle coach Dave Petterson of Dunn. “I play him in practice when I stand in for the players. It’s so hard to take the puck off him. He just pulls it out of your reach and skates by you. He is such a strong skater you can’t take him one-on-one, you need to double-team him just to slow him down. He is setting himself up for a strong year, I can tell especially in practice, because he is a bear to stop. And he can make the younger players better. He can set them up and talk to them. He lets them know where to be and what to do. He is a really good leader in that sense.”

The Scots grabbed a 3-0 lead late in the opening period when Hamilton tallied his first goal of the game with 32.2 seconds left. Dunn got him the puck and he flipped it over Corthell for a 3-0 lead.

“Three-nothing after the first period-we just had to regroup,” Pasquarello said. “So we changed some things up to try and get more firepower. We did a little better in the second, but they got more goals on us.”

The Scots got four more goals in the second period. The first came less than three minutes into the period. The Seastangs’ Jeff Elliott was whistled for the game’s first penalty to set up a Bonny Eagle power play. Hamilton notched his second goal of the game during the man advantage.

Midway through the period, Hamilton finished off his hat trick with an unassisted goal. He faked to his forehand and shot with the backhand to make it a 5-0 Bonny Eagle lead. The Scots added two more goals in the second when Bishop and Dunn scored just over a minute apart.

“Going into the third, I asked the captains to ask everyone on the team if there was anyone who felt like throwing in the towel down 7-0 going into the third period,” Pasquarello said. “They all came out ready to play and I think we won the third period.”

The Scots did get one goal in the third period when Dunn finished off a hat trick of his own during a Bonny Eagle power play. The Seastangs never had a power play chance because the Scots played penalty-free the entire game.

“I don’t think we have ever had a no penalty game, at least not as long as I have been here. And that’s really impressive,” Petterson said.

In the end, the Scots proved to be too much for the Seastangs out shooting them 48-4 on the way to the 8-0 victory.

“Overall I was pretty happy with how we were moving the puck especially down low in the zone,” Petterson said. “I like how we were using players who were open and I like how our defense was cutting down the middle and our players used them well. We could have done better with rebounds and things like that, but for the second game of the season I’m happy.”

The Seastangs are still winless this season and were scheduled to take on Noble on Wednesday. The Scots are 2-0 and were set to face Sanford Monday.
