Heinz off base with support of weir project
The purpose of this letter is to respond to the column published in the July 16 edition of the Current titled “Fishing Lines: Sebago Lake-Crooked River System a Unique Asset,” by Steve Heinz.
The column incorrectly states that a portable fish weir will be installed this fall in the Crooked River.
According to Francis Brautigam, regional fisheries biologist, the proposed fish weir will not be installed in 2015 due to fall staff commitments to other projects.
While the proper staffing of the proposed weir is a serious concern, the problems the weir will create by interrupting the free and clear passage that currently exists for the spawning salmon remains the primary concern for myself and others. As conservation chair for the Sebago chapter of Trout Unlimited, I find Steve Heinz’s apparent support of the weir to be misguided.
