The state is paying for bottled water for one Gorham homeowner who believes her well was contaminated because of the new bypass.

The bypass divided Constance Riechel’s farm land and is located within a couple hundred yards of her home. Where she once viewed wildlife and fields, she now sees trucks.

Mark Latti, the spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation, confirmed Monday that Riechel had contacted the department about her well. He said her well was tested before and after construction of the bypass. He said the test of her well water after construction showed a minor amount of coliform bacteria.

Latti said the department collected another sample from Riechel’s well last week to determine whether the coliform was still present. He said another homeowner had contacted the department with the same concern about well water.

Riechel, who has lived 32 years in her home, said her well is 380 feet deep. Delivery of water to her home began Monday.
