Historians to hear Roberts

The Westbrook Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting and free program on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at 17B Dunn St.

John M. Roberts, proprietor of JaYar Signs in South Portland, will be the speaker. Roberts has been in the sign trade for 52 years. His business is tailored specifically to neon signage these days; however, he has met the needs for many types of signs.

He will demonstrate the technique of gilding on glass, an art of a bygone era. The technique involves applying gold to glass. Gold leaf was used for many window signs as well as transoms where addresses were gold leafed. Today, there are few who know this technique, as the demands of the business have changed.

The program is free and open to the public.

Morgan earns religious award

Boy Scout Ben Morgan received his God and Country Award during a worship service on Sept. 16 at First Baptist Church in Westbrook.

The award is granted to scouts who have completed a study workbook, participated in the worship and life of the church and researched church history along with the present impact of the church in the community. To earn the award, scouts are also required to learn about the missionaries the church supports and the focus of their ministries.

Retired pastor Russ Hartley was Morgan’s counselor and worked closely with Morgan as he completed each of the seven lessons. Hartley pinned the badge on Morgan’s uniform.

The present pastor, the Rev. Rich Gustafson, presented Morgan with a framed certificate. John Carmichael, a church member, presented Morgan with the patch to be sewn on his uniform. Morgan’s parents were each presented a lapel pin, duplicating Morgan’s badge, by Scoutmaster Dick Chretien and Cub Pack Master Ruth Chretien.

A reception was held for Ben Morgan in the church’s fellowship hall. Punch was served along with a cake made by Irena Whoten, a member of the teen church class.
