Westbrook Little League completed May with Kiwanis at the top of the standings with Sappi and Tickets Unlimited close behind.

Kiwanis got a well-pitched game against Phoenix Welding from Zack Bean and Tristan Savage. Kiwanis was sparked offensively by Nick Zabenko, having a good game with the bat. Greg Buotte provided some key hits in this game. Repeat hitters were Noah Collins, Derek Bruenig and Zack Bean. Phoenix was led by a triple from Kyle Heath and a fine defensive from the centerfielder throwing a strike to home to cut down a run.

Sappi gets two wins

Sappi moved into sole possession of second place by winning both of their games, 5-3 over Lions and 5-4 over Messer. Josh Ames picked up the victory while Kaleb Kent picked up the save. Kent came in with the bases loaded in the sixth to retire the final two batters to preserve the victory. Offensively, Marty McInnis had a two run RBI in the sixth to give Sappi the come-from-behind victory. Repeat hitters for Sappi were Kent and Alec Hazlewood. Adam Blackmore scored his first run in Little League. In their second victory, Kent was the winning pitcher with Hazlewood saving the game. Offensively, Tylor Work, Andrew Lamson, and Marty Mcinnis all had hits for Sappi with Kent blasting a three-run homer.

Tickets tops Phoenix

Tickets Unlimited defeated Phoenix Welding 5-4. Phoenix made a great comeback in the sixth inning with singles by Kyle Heath and Trey Arsenault to make it a one run game. After five innings of great pitching by Derek Bouchard, Curtis Knapton came in to close out the game for Tickets. Isaac Theriault had two RBI singles for Tickets while Matt Caron had two big doubles for Phoenix.

Eagles get two big wins

The Eagles also moved up in the standings with two big wins. First, they topped first-place Kiwanis 11-5. Chandler Todd was the winning pitcher as he struck out 11 while allowing only three hits. Blake Fillmore picked up the save for the Eagles. Offensively, eight Eagles had hits. Zack Bean led the way for Kiwanis with two hits. The Eagles’ second game against Tickets featured a great pitching duel between Brenden Richardson and Austin Blake with the Eagles coming out on top 2-1. Richardson threw a two-hitter and struck out 11. The Eagles scored twice in the first inning behind hits by Richardson and Ethan Nash. This would be the only hit that Blake would allow. The play of the game came in the fourth inning with two on and two outs, Jacob Webster hit a line drive to center field, but the speedy Joe Gonzales ran it down to preserve the victory.

As Westbrook Little League heads into the final week of the regular season, Sappi moved into sole possession of first with Kiwanis and Tickets Unlimited still in the hunt.

Sappi won all three of their games, pushing their winning streak to seven straight. Sappi started the week by defeating Dairy Queen 8-4. Andrew Lamson picked up the win with Tylor Work coming on for the save. Repeat hitters for Sappi were Marty McInnis, DJ Henrickson and Lamson. Kyle Hebert added a double and Tylor Work had a triple.

Sappi then won two very close games over Phoenix and the Eagles by the same score of 3-2 in seven innings. Against Phoenix Welding, Josh Ames, Alec Hazelwood and Kaleb Kent combined for a two-hitter. Kent hit a game-winning homer in the seventh. Against the Eagles, Josh Ames laid down a perfect bunt in the bottom of the sixth to push the tying run across the plate. Sappi then won it in extra innings, as Henrickson hit a game-winning RBI single. Kaleb Kent pitched 4.2 innings of no-hit ball, and Lamson Came on to pitch the sixth and seventh to get the win. Chandler Todd pitched very well for the Eagles, striking out 12 in five innings. Jaron White made a great defensive play the Eagles as he threw out a runner at the plate to send the game to extra innings.

Tickets Unlimited fell 11-6 against Messer Trucking. Messer pounded out eight hits, including homers from Andrew St. Clair and Nagee White. Kyle Schumacher collected three hits as well. Tickets were only able to score two runs against St. Clair.

Tickets rallied late, but came up short. For Tickets, Derek Bouchard hit his fourth home run of the season while Isaac Theriault got his first Little League homer. Curtis Knapton had a nice game with three hits for Tickets.

Tickets then grabbed a 7-3 victory in extra innings. Ryan Gilligan and Derek Bouchard pitched great games before giving way to the closers. In the extra frame, James Phelps led off the inning for Tickets with a triple in the gap, Logan McCarthy proceeded to hit a triple of his own to drive in what would be the winning run. Bailey Sawyer drove in the insurance run before Austin Blake slammed the door with a line shot two-run homer. Blake and Bouchard had three hits each while Phelps added two of his own. Collin Joyce had three hits for the Lions and was left at third base with the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Messer also picked up a victory against Kiwanis 7-6 as the big three, Schumacher, St Clair and Champagne combined for seven hits to lead the offense. Evan Scott also had a nice hit for Messer.

In other games, the Eagles lost to Phoenix Welding 7-3 as Phoenix came from behind. Kyle Heath led the way with two hits and both Kaleb Bourassa and AJ Johnsey had doubles to the fence. Chandler Todd had three hits for the Eagles and Joe Gonzales doubled as well. In the third game, the Eagles beat Dairy Queen 3-2. Keigan Sears hit a walk-off double for the win. Ethan Nash had three hits and Blake Fillmore pitched five strong innings for Phoenix. Dairy Queen was led by Jack McCullough who pitched very well and had two hits.

Games are played nightly at 5:30 p.m. with the playoffs beginning Saturday, June 14.
