Gorham opens with two wins

The Gorham softball team knocked off Sanford by an 8-6 score last Friday and the Rams followed that up with a 3-1 win at McAuley on Monday.

Gorham pitcher Crowe went the distance against the Lions in a game that featured just five hits between both teams. Kelsey Crowe limited McAuley batters to only two hits.

Sarah Burnheimer provided all the offense that Gorham needed as she blasted a two-run homer in the Rams’ first at-bat of the game.

Rachele Burns led the way in the Rams’ season opening win against Sanford. The sophomore slugger belted a pair of home runs in a three RBI performance.

Pitcher Tammy Arsenault had an impressive season debut going all seven innings and striking out 12 Redskins.

Bonny Eagle splits first two games

Bonny Eagle defeated Massabesic by an 8-1 score on Monday and then fell by a slim 1-0 score at Thornton in a make-up contest on Tuesday.

“At this point in the young season, I feel that our team is right on track to make yet another tournament appearance,” said Bonny Eagle coach Jan Corliss. “Both of our returning veteran pitchers, Kaitlin Williams and Maddie Kluna are throwing well.”

Corliss added that Williams pitched in the 8-1 win over the Mustangs and she was supported by excellent hitting from sophomores Stephanie Stockwell and Messina Provencher, and seniors Sarah Violette and Mallery Stanley.

“Yesterday, Maddie (Kluna) mixed her pitches very well and was very accurate with her throwing,” said Corliss. “Alyssa Dunn

was the best hitter for us with two hits (single and double).

“I think we have the ability defensively and offensively to make some noise in the league this year,” Corliss added. “We have some excellent speed. All we have to do is be able to hit the ball

consistently. We have a mix of power and contact hitters, and most of the players are very good with the bunt.”
