Westbrook Police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department conducted a roadblock Wednesday morning in an attempt to crack down on people driving on suspended licenses.

Westbrook Police Chief Paul McCarthy said officers conducted the check at the intersection of Westbrook Arterial and Larrabee Road from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. during Wednesday’s morning commute. Officers pulled cars over in groups of six while letting the rest of traffic flow by, he said.

McCarthy said each group of six cars took about five to seven minutes to check, with one officer onsite and one officer at the Public Safety Building running licenses simultaneously. The intent was to make the stops without disrupting the flow of traffic, he said.

According to McCarthy, police stopped 470 cars and cited six drivers for driving with suspended licenses. He said two of those six were also arrested and taken into custody on charges stemming from outstanding warrants, while a third cited for operating after suspension was taken into custody as well. McCarthy said the numbers were fairly consistent with sheriff’s department numbers when running these checkpoints.

McCarthy said Westbrook police conducted one other checkpoint earlier in the summer and would likely continue with the practice from time to time. “We consider it a successful activity and a sign of cooperation between agencies to address a significant problem,” he said.
