A tractor was removed from Bonny Eagle Pond in Buxton after it crashed through the ice on New Years Eve while apparently clearing snow.
Buxton Officer Christine Labranche said Mike Grovo, 20, of Limington was the operator but was not injured. Labranche said Grovo is the nephew of Buxton Officer Mike Grovo.
Labranche said the incident occurred about 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 while Grovo was clearing the ice for snowmobiling. Labranche said the tractor was pulled from the pond at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. She said no fuel was leaking from the tractor.
A neighbor contacted the Department of Environmental Protection about the incident.
According to Barbara Parker, director of response services for the department, on Jan. 3 a department investigator said the tractor was about 60 feet from the shore line and the water was about 3 feet deep. The investigator, Steve Brezinski, didn’t find any impact on the shoreline or wells, but left a number for neighbors to call.
On Wednesday, a neighbor on Lowell Road, Robin Thurston, said a slick with rainbow colors became visible. She contacted the DEP.
Thurston speculated the slick could have been caused by a tow truck that pulled the tractor from the pond.
