Took home the gold

As members of the Old Orchard High School marching band, six Gorham students were awarded gold medals on Oct. 27 in the Maine Band Directors’ Association final at Sanford High School.

The Gorham gold winners were sophomores Emily Rosenblatt (sax) and Tom Bennett (drumline); juniors Allie Platts (trumpet), Matt King (trumpet) and Julianne Farrar (flute); and senior Adrienne Rosenblatt (percussion). Gorham students had the opportunity to join the Old Orchard Beach marching band, which also has members from Portland, Scarborough, Falmouth and Saco, because Gorham doesn’t have one.

Thirteen bands participated in event, according to Mark Manduca, music director of Old Orchard Beach High School and president of the Maine Band Directors Association. There are six categories in which bands were judged, including drum major, music, color guard, percussion, visual presentation, and general effect.

This is the third gold medal for Emily Rosenblatt, Adrienne Rosenblat and Allie Platts, as Old Orchard is the first band in the Maine marching band circuit to achieve gold medals three years in a row. This year Old Orchard’s program featured theme music from James Bond movies and was titled “007 meets OOB.”
