Sanphy receives retirement honors
Recently retired Westbrook Police Sgt. Mike Sanphy will present the program when the Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at 17B Dunn St.
Sanphy has prepared a slide show, “Westbrook Then & Now, Part II,” featuring old and new photographs of the city. Donna Conley, president of the society, said the meeting is the first of the season for the society. The public is welcome and there is no charge. Items donated this summer to the society’s museum will be displayed.
Sanphy, who retired this summer after 40 years of service, was honored at a retirement dinner Saturday at the Thomas Room in South Portland. Police Chief Bill Baker was the host at the gathering that packed the room.
Westbrook Mayor Bruce Chuluda was joined by public safety personnel and citizens in honoring Sanphy with gifts, plaques and praise. John Richardson, commissioner of Maine’s Department of Economic and Community Development, read a proclamation from Gov. John Baldacci, who is attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
Church hosting annual art show
Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St., will hosts its third annual art show, Friday, Aug. 29-Sunday, Sept. 7. An opening reception and tea is Friday from 1-4 p.m. The art can be seen Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Viewing hours the next weekend are Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m.-noon.
A chowder luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $5. A brunch is Sunday, Sept. 7, at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $4.
Westbrook Riverwalk-a-thon set
The Salvation Army in Westbrook will be hosting a fundraiser its organization at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, on the boardwalk behind 11 Bridge St.
The route will follow the river walk and will end where it began. The registration fee is $15. Sponsor forms and registrations are available at the River of Life or donations can be made online at www.use.salvationarmy.org/westbrook
Brenda Orach, social ministry chairperson of Trinity Lutheran Church, said that money raised in the walk would help support the River of Life Cafa, Monday food distribution, the food pantry, sending kids to camp and helping families in crisis, as its service to the community.
Sallies in pulpit
The Rev. Robert Sallies will be the guest speaker when the Unitarian Universalist Church of Westbrook, 719 Main St., commences its fall services at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7.
