Police have not released the name of the driver who was killed in a fiery, single-car crash late Friday on Dingley Spring Road in Gorham.

Sgt. Daniel Young of the Gorham police said in a report the driver was trapped inside a car when it burst into flames after the car struck two trees at 11:23 p.m. Friday. Police said excessive heat and smoke prevented first responders from rescuing the driver.

The police report said a white 1995 Nissan Maxima was traveling south on Dingley Spring Road in West Gorham when the driver lost control. The car hit a large tree, causing extensive damage to the car. It then came to rest against a second tree.

Police said the car burst into flames with the driver trapped inside. Witnesses unsuccessfully tried to rescue the driver, who was “unresponsive.” Gorham Fire Department extinguished the fire. Using hydraulic tools, rescue workers cut through wreckage to remove the victim.

The crash is still under investigation by the Gorham police.
