The Westbrook Police Department is warning all residents to be aware that there continues to be a problem in greater Portland with thefts from automobiles. Being the victim of this type of theft is an aggravation, and leads in many cases to significant inconvenience due to lost identification, driver’s licenses and replacement of credit cards and checking accounts, but that may not be the end of it. Residents may also suffer from additional crimes in the future such as credit card fraud and identity theft.

Police are encouraging all drivers to follow some simple steps to reduce the likelihood of being the victim of automobile burglary.

First, carry only what you need in terms of valuables in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. Stow the rest of your things in the trunk.

Second, when you leave your car for any reason, no matter how short the duration, take any valuables from the passenger compartment with you or place them in the trunk.

Finally, lock your car and take the keys with you. This includes while parked in your own driveway.

Police know from experience that if there is nothing of value that can be seen in the vehicle, a thief is more likely to move on to another car rather than take the time to search a car.

Victims who have lost such items as wallets, pocketbooks, briefcases, cameras, sunglasses, laptop computers and cash know that employing these prevention tips is a far smaller inconvenience than becoming a victim.
