Child car-seat instruction

Capt. Steven Goldberg of Westbrook Police Department reports that Officer Melissa May is a certified child car-seat technician.

It means, Goldberg said, May can properly install and inspect child car seats.

“Research has found that three out of four child car seats are not installed properly,” he said.

Seniors to meet and eat

Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a meal at noon on Monday, May 16, at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The menu includes stuffed shells with sauce, salad, Italian bread, and strawberry shortcake. Sally Trice will sing and play the accordian.

This meeting will be the final meeting for the seniors until September.

‘Rejoicing Spirits’ at Trinity

Trinity Lutheran Church, 612 Main St., is hosting its monthly special service for persons with cognitive and, or development disabilities, at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 15.

The program, called “Rejoicing Spirits,” includes messages, music and joyous singing followed by fellowship and supper.

Poetry series

Jim Donnelly and Anna Wrobel will host the Lowry’s Lodge poetry series when it continues at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, at Continuum for Creativity, 863 Main St., Westbrook.

Poetry will include poems in journals and collections  with featured poets  Dana Robbins and Jim Mello. The event will include questions and answers session and refreshments. Suggested donation, $4.

Grange honor

Deb Shangraw, right, was awarded the 2016 Highland Lake Grange Community Service Award by Grange Master Dave Gowen last week during a ceremony at the Grange, on Hardy Road. Shangraw, a Westbrook business owner, volunteers at several community organizations, including My Place Teen Center, the Westbrook/Gorham Rotary Club, the Downtown Westbrook Coalition and the Westbrook Historical Society. Shangraw moved to Westbrook in 1983, where her family owned and operated Mill Brook Garden Center. She owns Emerald Property Management on Main Street, which manages condominiums, apartments, office and retail commercial properties and more. Shangraw is also very active at the Greater Portland Vineyard Church, where she has been a member since 1999.
