Buxton police Monday night arrested a man, armed with knives, who is suspected of a wild drive through town – eluding police, crashing into cars and fleeing on foot.
A TV news crew eventually spotted the suspect, leading to the arrest.
Police said Tuesday that Jon Doucette, 21, of Westbrook, was charged with eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle), both Class C crimes; numerous misdemeanor traffic charges and numerous civil traffic violations. Doucette was taken to York County Jail in Alfred and bail was set at $5,000 cash.
The incidents developed at 7:18 p.m. Aug. 8 when police attempted to stop a black, 2009 Chevy Silverado pickup truck traveling westerly on Long Plains Road (Route 22) in Buxton. Police said the vehicle had passed “a line of vehicles” stopped at a stop sign and failed to stop at the intersection.
“Officer Warren Day attempted to stop the vehicle to determine why it had been driving erratically,” the police press release said, but the pickup fled from Day at a “high rate of speed.”
Day was unable to catch up with the pickup, police said, but saw it force several cars off the road and run a red light at the intersection of routes 22 and 202 (Narragansett Trail).
Officer Galen Hall tried to set up a spike mat on Long Plains Road near Rocky Dundee Road, but the vehicle nearly struck Hall and failed to stop, the report said.
The truck struck a vehicle north of Parker Farm Road (Route 112) and hit another vehicle on Saco Road near Bonny Eagle Middle School, police said. Buxton fire and rescue personel assisted those injured. The driver fled on foot. Police called in state police and Cumberland County canine teams to track the suspect but were unsuccessful.
A Channel 8 news crew told police they had seen someone fitting the suspect’s description in the area of Parker Farm and Skip roads. There, Hall located the pickup’s registered owner, who the report said,”fit the description of the operator that fled the scene of the crash.”
The police report said that Doucette “was armed with two knives at the time of his arrest.”
