Fall festival features

The Freeport Fall Festival, now in its 18th year, is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 -2, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. both days.

According to FreeportUSA, which organizes the event, some 120 artists will exhibit works ranging from photography, oil, watercolor, mixed media, fine craft, and jewelry. Hosted on the L.L. Bean campus and Freeport Village Station courtyard, the free festival includes children’s art activities and Maine food producers. The Freeport Community Services’ annual Chowdah Challenge, to raise funds for camp scholarships, will also be held Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the L.L. Bean Home Store. Visitors can sample and vote for Freeport Maine’s best chowder. Restaurants will compete for two awards: The People’s Choice Award and the Judges’ Award for Best Chowdah. Cost is $10, and all proceeds will go to support FCS.

Live music for the whole family starts Saturday at 11 a.m. with Midcoast School of Music, Dark Hollow Bottling Company and Gunther Brown. Also starting at 11 on Sunday will be Midcoast School of Music, followed by Bellamy Jazz Band and Raging Brass Reggae.

FHS Homecoming

Friday, Saturday

Freeport High School’s Homecoming Weekend is Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17. Events on Friday include boys and girls cross country meet at 4 p.m., Hunter Road; a student and community cookout at 6 p.m., at the Morse Street parking lot and soccer snack shack; and a bonfire at 7:15 p.m. Parents should pick up students at approximately 8:15 in the Morse Street circle.

Saturday includes boys first-team soccer vs. Falmouth at 9 a.m., at the Freeport Middle School; boys varsity soccer vs. Wells at 9:30 a.m.; girls varsity/JV soccer vs. Wells at11 a.m.; varsity/JV field hockey vs. Poland at 11 a.m.; and varsity football vs. Gray-New Gloucester at 2:30 p.m., at the Pownal Road field. Boosters will be operating concession stands throughout the day.

The homecoming dance is 7:30-10:30 p.m. at the high school.

Talk focuses on

historical art exhibit

Holly Hurd, curator of  the current exhibit at the Freeport Historical Society, “Freeport Artists of the Past,” will present a visual lecture that expands on the themes, Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., at Harrington House, 45 Main St. A reception is at 6:30.

This exhibit showcases the work of 20 artists who lived in Freeport between 1870 and 1950. Some were trained professionally while others were “hobbyists” occupied with different careers. A few of the displayed artists were exceptionally accomplished, and their works are collected by major museums today. The talk will focus on stories of the artists’ work and their lives, supplemented by historical photographs and documents. Hurd will describe highlights of the exhibit including rarely viewed works from Colby Art Museum, Peary-MacMillan Artic Museum, Maine Historical Society, Salem Public Library, and from private individuals.

The talk is free to members and $5 for all others.

At Wilbur’s of Maine, 174 Lower Main St., chocolate factory tours are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, at noon,12:45, 1:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The cost is $4.50. On Saturday, Sept. 24, from noon-3 p.m., factory visitors can make chocolate owl pops, at $4.

at woman’s club

Marsea Spiegel, a holistic health practitioner and licensed massage therapist, will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the Freeport Woman’s Club, Friday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m., at the Freeport Community Library. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served.

The Freeport Woman’s Club is a service organization that has been in existence for over 90 years. It meets once a month at the Freeport Community Library for a business meeting and program. The club’s fundraising projects include a spring bazaar and a bake sale on Election Day. Money raised provide local scholarships, community improvements, donations to Freeport Community Services and support for women seeking career education. Golf tournament

to benefit school

The Pine Tree Academy Golf Tournament is Sunday, Sept. 18, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., at Toddy Brook Golf Course, North Yarmouth. The proceeds will go toward tuition assistance, scholarships and transportation for the students.

Cost is $95 per person and includes continental breakfast, 18-hole green fees, golf cart and a hot luncheon following the tournament. Those who aren’t golfers can show their support by sponsoring a cart for as little as $30, or simply send in a donation of any amount.

Y hosts talk on

Parkinson’s surgery

The YMCA of Southern Maine, Casco Bay branch will host a presentation on deep-brain stimulation surgery for people with Parkinson’s disease, on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 2-4 p.m. The presentation is for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.

The presentation will feature a neurologist who specializes in Parkinson’s and Dr. Anand Rughani, a neurosurgeon that does the surgery in Maine. For more information, call the Y at 865-9600.

Freeport Masons

hosting ham supper

Baked ham, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, homemade biscuits, dessert and a beverage are all on the menu Saturday, Sept. 17, from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m., when the Freeport Masons host a supper at the Masonic Lodge, Mallet Drive. The cost is $9, and $4.50 for children under 12.

Authors to make

library appearances

The library will welcome author Kate Christensen for the first time on Friday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m. She is the author of six novels including “The Epicure’s Lament,” “The Great Man” and “The Astral,” as well as two food-centric memoirs, “Blue Plate Special: an Autobiography of My Appetites” and her most recent, “How to Cook a Moose: A Culinary Memoir.” She lives in both Portland and the White Mountains.

With the help of Maine author Kate Flora, Maine game warden Roger Guay has written a memoir, “A Good Man with a Dog,” and they will talk about the book at the Freeport Community Library on Monday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m. Guay became a game warden and certified K-9 handler in 1986, beginning a successful 25-year career during which he established canine units as a staple of the game warden service. Guay searches for lost hunters and hikers, estimating that over the years, he has pulled more than two hundred bodies out of Maine’s north woods. His frequent companion is a brown Lab named Reba, who can find discarded weapons, ejected shells, hidden fish and missing people. Flora is an award-winning author of mystery and true crime books.

On Monday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m., the library will host Maine author, teacher and world traveler Carolyn Locke, who will read selections from her haibun (a combination of prose, haiku, and photography), “Not One Thing: Following Matsuo Basho’s Narrow Road to the Interior.” The book explores her travels around the island of Honshu with 15 other teachers from the United States as part of a Fulbright-Hays Special Project. She will also have a slide of cultural and historical sites in Japan.

Betty ReeZ WhoopieZ is sponsoring the first annual Betty ReeZ Columbus 4-Miler on Sunday, Oct. 9, starting at 10 a.m. Betty ReeZ has partnered with Buck’s Naked BBQ in the road race, which begins and ends at Buck’s Naked BBQ. The Juke Joint will be open to all runners and their families post-race. All the net proceeds will be donated to the Tri-Town Track & Field Project.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first and second place overall male and female winners, and Whoopie Pie prizes to the first and second place finishers in various age groups. As always, a Whoopie Pie will be given to all registered runners.

At college

Cadet Kyle Andrew Rosado, son of Kris and Jennifer “Jerre” Rosado of Freeport, completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy. Rosado entered West Point on June 27. The basic training is one of the most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy. Rosado graduated summa cum laude from Freeport High School. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2020 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Castleton University, Castelton, Vt., has welcomed Emily Johnson of Freeport as one of nearly 700 new students who have registered for the fall 2016 semester.

Jill Baker of Freeport served as an orientation team leader at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa., in August. The orientation team is composed of upper-class students who help new students make the transition to life at Susquehanna. Baker is a communications major in the class of 2019. A 2015 graduate of Freeport High School, she is the daughter of Stephen Baker and Liz Andrews.

Inside tips offered

on college admissions

Wendy Thompson, former Bowdoin College assistant dean of admissions, will present, “How Do Colleges Really Choose Students: An Inside Look at the College Admissions Process,” Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m., at Freeport Community Library

Thompson, of Westport Educational Consulting Services, is well qualified to share her expertise regarding college admissions. During her time on the Bowdoin College admissions staff, Thompson evaluated almost 10,000 applications, read over 20,000 application essays, and conducted hundreds of interviews. She will be joined by Michael Montgomery, Dickinson College’s associate director of admissions, whose career includes 10 years in admissions at his alma mater, Colby College.

The presentation is geared toward families of high school students in every grade.
