The city of South Portland still needs to develop a long-term master plan for its newest park, located on the corner of Westbrook and Main streets on the western end of the city, but Mayor Tom Blake is “very pleased” with the preliminary work that’s been done on making the site accessible for public use.
Shaw Brothers Construction, from Gorham, has been using the site as a staging area for the city’s multiphase Thornton Heights sewer separation project. As part of its contract, the company agreed to leave it graded and seeded for public use.
The site now also includes a stonework retaining wall and entrance, along with a stone dust path, a few trees and a bench.
“We need to get going on discussing how we’re going to use that space, but for now the goal was for the contractor to leave it attractive and safe” for public use, Blake said this week.
