Four finalists listed for Miss Maine Softball award

The four finalists for the Miss Maine Softball Award, given to the state’s outstanding senior player, were announced Saturday.

They are pitcher Julia Geaumont of Thornton Academy, pitcher/shortstop Mo Hannan of Scarborough, catcher Janelle Bouchard of Kennebunk and catcher Mindy Pye of Bucksport.

The winner will be announced Thursday during the intermission of the East-West senior all-star games at Cony High in Augusta.

SOCCER

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Co-host Poland and Group A favorite Russia crashed out of the tournament, as the Czech Republic and Greece scored 1-0 wins to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Czechs won the group, thanks to a second-half goal from Petr Jiracek at Wroclaw, Poland.

At Warsaw, Greece recaptured the spirit and style of its surprise Euro 2004 title, as captain Giorgos Karagounis scored against the run of play just before halftime.

U.S. WOMEN: Abby Wambach’s 136th career goal for the United States led the Americans past Sweden 3-1 at Halmstad, Sweden, in a tuneup for the London Olympics.

MLS: Matt Reis made three saves as the New England Revolution played to a scoreless draw against the visiting Columbus Crew.

BASEBALL

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: D.J. Baxendale and Brandon Moore combined on a four-hitter, and Jake Wise homered as Arkansas defeated Kent State 8-1 to spoil the Golden Flashes’ first appearance in the tournament at Omaha, Neb.

NECBL: The New Bedford Bay Sox (4-3) used a seven-run sixth inning to rally for an 8-4 win over the Sanford Mainers (2-6) in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at New Bedford, Mass.

Sanford scored its runs in the fifth inning, capped by Jose Torralba’s two-run single.

FCBL: Kyle Bobolts and Casey Cotter hit RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Seacoast Mavericks to a 4-3 victory over the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game at Rochester, N.H.

Saige Jenco, Grayson Porter and Jason Vosler each drove in a run for the Raging Tide.

ROAD RACING

U.S. HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP: Sheri Piers of Falmouth won the masters division and finished 11th overall among women in Duluth, Minn.

Piers, 41, finished in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 19 seconds. Duluth native Kara Goucher was the overall women’s champion in 1:19:34.

Abdi Abdirahman took the men’s title in 1:12:46.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Jessica Davenport scored 19 points to lead the Indiana Fever to an 84-70 victory over the visiting Chicago Sky.

• Sophia Young and Becky Hammon scored 24 points each to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars to a 98-85 win in overtime against the visiting Los Angeles Sparks.

TENNIS

GERRY WEBER OPEN: Roger Federer will face Tommy Haas in today’s final at Halle, Germany, bidding to win the tournament for a record sixth time.

Haas defeated defending champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Federer eased past Mikhail Youzhny, 6-1, 6-4.

QUEEN’S CLUB: Marin Cilic beat American Sam Querrey in the semifinals at London, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Cilic will play David Nalbandian, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Grigor Dimitrov.
