YORK — The Bureau of Motor Vehicles has decided to discontinue a mobile unit that visited town to process driver’s licenses and identification cards, citing a refocusing effort on underserved areas.
The mobile unit visited York once a month at the American Legion Hall at 9 Hannaford Drive, however with the sale of the American Legion building, the lease expired and the BMV discontinued the service on Aug. 20.
“We’ve been realigning our mobile unit visits to truly reach underserved areas, and these locations do not seem to fit that category,” said Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap in a press release.
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles encouraged customers in York to visit the BMV offices in either Kennebunk or Springvale, and noted that many services can now be completed online.
The BMV also will be ending visits to Wiscasset.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
