As stated in my last column, I would like to continue on sharing my thoughts about the upcoming and past trends of society to bring awareness to those who are not in the know of what younguns find popular nowadays.

A gooey substance has been in the hands of children and adults for the past few months. It has taken over various social media sites with it’s satisfactory shapes and feeling. I too have spent a fair amount of time watching videos of people handling the substance on my daily doses of scrolling through popular social media app, “Instagram.”

Slime has been a sensation for months! The easy and fun substance has been told by many to create a sense of peace and relaxation when handling it. 

Recently, I have been investigating what allows for this slime to bring such peace to so many people. For some, I found that it is the peeling sound the goo makes when folded that gives them satisfaction. For others, it is just the feeling of the substance being formed to the hands that brings comfort.

During my hours of work as a camp counselor, I have noticed that many of the children I watch own this gooey material. 

This leads me ask, why do children enjoy using this product?

Why are adults supporting children with this product?

Surprisingly, Slime is often homemade instead of store bought. Parents may find this as a quick and affordable solution for their children’s boredom. Typically the ingredients consist of common household items such as glue, baking soda, and food coloring. As a result, the items mixed together create hours of gooey fun! 

Back in June, I was able to test out Slime during an afternoon of working at an after-school care program. I agree in the sense of satisfaction that the product does bring a calming effect to those who use it. For me, it was how the material molded to my hands.

I have always been the type of person that fidgets often. In fact, I have used popular product, “Play Dough” as a remedy to my constant movements. While others may find it distracting, kneading the dough allows me to focus on listening to my surroundings more. 

However, with Slime taking over the lives of many, I believe that this product is going to become the new “Play Dough.” 

It is safe, affordable, and fun. What gives a better reason for it to not become the next big dough product?

With that, I hope that those who haven’t tried the product allow themselves to do it. Just remember to take caution, for the material may cause for hours of gooey fun!
