Massabesic girl lacrosse, Kennebunk girls lacrosse, Thornton Academy boys lacrosse and Wells softball will be competing with hopes of punching their tickets to this weekend’s state title games.
Here is a look at the matchups:
Girls Lacrosse
Massabesic vs. Marshwood
The top-seeded, undefeated Mustangs will host No. 2 Marshwood in a rematch of last year’s Class A South title game.
Massabesic takes a 14-0 record into this matchup, and will be favored heavily over the visiting Hawks.
The Mustangs have proven to be perhaps the most efficient club in the state, getting impressive production from the attack, midfield and defenders in 2017. Most of the Massabesic roster was present in last year’s state title game, where it dropped a tough decision to Messalonskee, who it led early on in the match.
Between Emma Desrochers, Josie Ring, Morgan Pike and Logan Champlin, this is also among the strongest cores in the state. Although Marshwood once again boasts a top-notch squad, the Mustangs, who won their regular season meeting 9-3, seem to be unstoppable in hopes of avenging their 2016 heartbreak.
Kennebunk vs. Falmouth
The No. 1 Rams look to defend their state title, but first have to beat No. 2 Falmouth to get their shot.
Despite losing its core and a rocky start to the season, Kennebunk caught fire in the second half and has surged all the way to the Class B Final.
Hallie Schwartzman, Katherine Koch and Erin Gorton have cemented their place as an elite scoring core in the conference, while Marran Oakman and Gabby Fogg have provided leadership and efficiency throughout.
Falmouth poses a tough test, and competed hard in a 9-5 loss to the Rams earlier this season. This matchup could go either way, but Kennebunk is the clear favorite heading into the final.
Boys Lacrosse
Thornton Academy vs. Scarborough
The Red Storm gutted out an 18-17, overtime win over TA this season to hand the Trojans their only loss of the season.
The two teams were even throughout, and combined for 35 goals and 97 shots. Both teams are offensive-minded, and have proven to be able to go on massive runs and put up big points at any given time.
The key in this matchup will be goaltending and defense, and both teams are pretty even in those departments. However, if Noah Edborg, Tom Levasseur, John Giroux and company can stay hot, TA may be able to call itself the favorite heading into the conference final.
Softball
Wells vs. Fryeburg Academy
The Warriors returned nearly the entire roster from 2016, and their experience showed as Wells cruised to a 15-1 regular season to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Class B South. Wells’ one loss however, came at the hands of No. 3 Fryeburg Academy, who will square off against them in the conference finals.
Wells pitcher Anya Chase has been lights out in the circle, while seniors Hannah Moody, Natalie Thurber, Sara Ring and Samantha Bogue have been dominant at the plate and in the field.
Fryeburg is also an experienced group ready to vie for a title shot, but if the Warriors continue at the pace they are on, they should make their way to the state title game this weekend.
