
YORK COUNTY — Falling leaves take a significant effort to rake up, place in bio-degradable bags and haul away, but for some beleaguered homeowners, a helping hand may be on the way soon in some communities in York County.
Two cities in the county have scheduled pickup days for discarded leaves and some other surrounding towns allow residents to dispose of leaves safely and in environmentally friendly ways.
Here’s a quick rundown of leaf disposal and collection in selected York County communities:
BIDDEFORD
The annual curbside collection of leaves is limited to leaves placed in bio-degradable bags.
Bio-degradable Bags may be purchased at the Biddeford Recycling Center or at a number of other area stores.
Leaf Collection for Wards 1, 2, 3, and 4 will be Monday, Nov. 5 and Monday, Nov. 19, while leaf collection for Wards 5 and 6 will be Monday, Nov. 12 and Monday, Nov. 26
Leaves may also be brought to the Biddeford Recycling Center during regular operating hours and from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 and Sunday, Nov. 25.
SANFORD
Leaves from residents of Sanford and Springvale will be accepted at the Transfer Station, 81 Rushton St. in Sanford, at no charge. A Transfer Station Permit is required to verify residency. Regular Transfer Station hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Between now and Nov. 17 the Transfer Station will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
If leaves are brought in bags, the bags must be emptied on site as only leaves will be accepted. No curbside pickup of leaves will be provided.
Sanford’s Public Works Department also encourage the on-site composting of leaves.
SACO
The city of Saco’s annual curbside leaf collection begins Tuesday, Nov. 13. Saco will only accept a maximum of 20 paper bags per household during curbside collection efforts. All bags be curbside by 7 a.m. on Nov. 13 to ensure bags are not placed after the street has been serviced. Each street will only be serviced for collection once. Collection could last a few days.
Should you wish to dispose of leaves on your own, the Saco Transfer Station does accept leaves for free to Saco residents all year.
During curbside collection, leaves must be in paper bags only, and not in plastic bags.
Leaves in plastic bags can be brought to the Transfer Station, but bags will have to be opened and dumped up, as plastic is not allowed in the Transfer Station’s compost pile.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH
The Old Orchard Beach Transfer Station accepts brush, grass, leaves, and used Christmas trees .
Transfer Station Hours for Old Orchard Beach are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
The Old Orchard Beach Transfer Station is on Dirigo Drive in Old Orchard Beach.
WELLS
The Wells Transfer Station accepts grass and leaves at no charge.
Hours of operation for the Wells Transfer Station are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
The Wells Transfer Station is at 386 Willie Hill Road in Wells.
KENNEBUNK
Leaves and grass clippings are accepted at the Kennebunk Transfer Station Facility from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Tuesdays through Saturdays.
The cost to dispose of leaves and grass clippings at $10 a yard.
The Kennebunk Transfer Station is at 36 Sea Road in Kennebunk.
