WELLS — The Wells girls lacrosse team pulled off an 8-6 comeback victory over visiting Noble on Monday afternoon.
Trailing 6-4 with 14 minutes left, the Warriors would string together four straight goals to secure the late victory.
Wells coach Jackie Proulx felt Monday’s win was important for her team, especially considering it was the Warriors’ first win of the season.
“It was huge for us to get our first win, especially at home. We had a slow start to the season, but I think this intensity really helped us … it’s going to be a really busy week for us,” said Proulx.
Noble jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes thanks to goals from Samantha Couture and Summer Smith. Wells would answer back in the ensuing 11 minutes, receiving two goals from Laney O’Brien to tie the score.
The Knights then regained the momentum, receiving goals from Colleen Allard and Couture to take a 4-2 lead.
Once again, Wells responded with two consecutive goals of their own with scores from Aimely Michaud- Nolan and Meg Schneider to tie the score.
With 25 seconds remaining in the first half, Smith scored her second goal to give the Knights a 5-4 lead heading into the break.
Couture scored to give Noble a 6-4 lead early in the second half, but from that point forward the Warriors took control of the game.
Wells managed to maintain possession for the majority of the final 14 minutes, resulting in a heavy offensive attack.
Michaud-Nolan, Bailey Marsh, Leah Tufts and Alyssa Loukola each scored in the streak to guide Wells to the victory.
Proulx believed the difference in the second half was her team’s composure on the attack.
“We kind of did a more settled attack. We made sure on attack that every time we were going to score a goal,” said Proulx. “That’s how we approached it and I think that is how we were able to get control in the end.”
Proulx also felt that Monday’s win was a good experience for some of the younger players on the roster.
“I think it’s huge because we have a lot of really young girls. We had a lot of young girls playing there in the end, so for them to fight and be aggressive I think its really important moving ahead,” said Proulx.
One of Wells’ unsung heroes for the game was goalie Margaret Patterson, who held the Knights to just one goal in the second half.
“This is only her second game at goalie since our first (goalie) got hurt. She got a lot of support from her team at half and knew that whatever she did was all we needed and she did that. That was awesome,” said Proulx.
The Warriors are happy to get their first win, but Proulx looks forward to improving in the upcoming practices.
“We need to work on our shooting … that’s important. We also are going to work on our attack. I think the biggest thing on attack is our motion, our defense looked great though, I was really happy with that today. We’re just going to keep working.”
