BIDDEFORD — John Philip Masse, 89, of Biddeford, died peacefully after a short illness on Wednesday, April 20, 2016,

Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Known by his family and friends as “Philip,” he was born in Biddeford on July 12, 1926, the son of Ernest and Edith (Booth) Masse. He attended school in Biddeford, graduating from Biddeford High School, Class of 1944. He attended Boston University, the Lincoln Institute and the University of Southern Maine.

Philip was employed for 43 years by Saco-Lowell Shops, now known as General Dynamics in Saco, where he retired as traffic manager in 1988.

As a member of the Maine Traffic Club, an organization related to transportation, he served as treasurer and vice president prior to and after his retirement.

He was very active in local government, serving on the Biddeford School Board, and later as a member of the local Planning Board, Community Development Commission and Biddeford Housing Authority.

Philip was an active member of the Knights of Columbus in Biddeford and in the state of Maine, serving as state deputy from 1967 to 1969.

He also enjoyed playing golf and traveling with his wife, Martha.

He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Martha (Gonthier) Masse; his daughter, Mrs. Janice (Masse) Isosaar and her husband Robert of Pensacola, Florida; his son, Thomas Masse and his wife Michelle of Temple; two granddaughters, Mrs. Jessica (Masse) Dapolito and her husband Robert, and Ms. Carrie Masse; four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

The family will receive visitors from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at St. Joseph Church. Burial at the family plot will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
