BATH
Debris caught fire inside a tank at Bath Iron Works late Monday.
The fire was reported at approximately 7:15 p.m., in Bath Iron Works’ new Ultra Hall at the shipyard’s south end. Two fire engines and an ambulance responded from Bath, as did a fire unit from BIW.
The fire burned debris, mostly coveralls and rags, and a fiberglass ladder that were inside a tank on a component of the DDG-1001 under construction, Bath fire Capt. Tim Merry said — the sort of fire that might have been sparked by welding.
“That’s usually the kind of fire we respond to down there,” he said.
Firefighters had to carry cans of water up flights of stairs and down into the tank to put out the blaze.
A BIW spokesperson said the fire was small and that there were no injuries or apparent major damage.
By 8:30 p.m., the Bath engines had left the shipyard.
