HAMPDEN (AP) — Maine officials are investigating a collision between a dump truck and freight train at a railroad crossing outside Bangor.
Officials tell WZON-AM that the accident happened around 11 a.m. Thursday when 63-year-old Frederick Lindsay of East Millinocket was hauling sand while driving down a hill on Route 9 in Hampden. Unable to stop, Lindsay crashed into a Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway train that was passing by.
The impact derailed the train’s engine.
Officials say Lindsay was alert and talking while being extricated from his truck before being flown by medical helicopter to a hospital for treatment.
The accident is under investigation by the railroad, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Protection.
