FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed quarterback Josh Johnson, adding another veteran to the mix.

The Jets announced the move Thursday night, a few hours after bringing Johnson in for a workout. To make room on the roster, New York waived undrafted rookie quarterback Jake Heaps.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starting quarterback with Geno Smith sidelined several more weeks with a broken jaw. Fourth-round draft pick Bryce Petty is currently Fitzpatrick’s backup. The Jets also signed veteran Matt Flynn last week, but he has yet to fully practice with a sore hamstring.

Johnson was a fifth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2008, and also has been with Cleveland and had two stints each with Cincinnati and San Francisco. The Bengals released him Tuesday after A.J. McCarron won the backup job.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga.

AP) — The NFL has reinstated Falcons team president Rich McKay as chairman of the league’s powerful Competition Committee after suspending him from the post for the use of artificial noise at Atlanta home games.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello announced the move by Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday, one day after he met with McKay in New York.

McKay was suspended from the rule-making committee on March 30 and had to wait at least three months before applying for reinstatement. The league also fined the Falcons and stripped the team of a fifth-round draft pick in 2016.

The league found that while McKay was not directly responsible for the artificial noise, he had some responsibility as the team official in charge of game-day operations at the Georgia Dome.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Redskins say an independent neurologist has cleared quarterback Robert Griffin III to play in Saturday’s exhibition game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Redskins announced Griffin’s status Thursday, a week after he was hurt in a preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

Earlier Thursday, Griffin evaded questions about when — or even if — he sustained a concussion last week.

So far, Griffin is 6 for 13 for 44 yards in two exhibition appearances, and the Redskins have not scored a touchdown with him on the field.

Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers rookies Tyler Murphy and Anthony Chickillo are trying to learn the NFL and a new position at the same time.

Murphy played quarterback at Florida and Boston College but moved to wide receiver when the Steelers signed him as an undrafted free agent. Chickillo was a defensive end at Miami but is transitioning to outside linebacker in Pittsburgh.

Murphy says he still thinks he is a quarterback but understands he needs to be versatile. He caught a touchdown pass in last Sunday’s exhibition win over Green Bay.

Defensive coordinator Keith Butler praised Chickillo’s ability but says it could take several years for him to get comfortable at linebacker.

The Steelers play at Buffalo on Saturday.

Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins are about to play in their stadium for the first time since a major remodeling project began.

Renovations won’t be done when the Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons kick off Saturday. In fact, the two-year project still has a year to go, and the estimated cost has climbed above $425 million.

But the stadium will be ready for the game. Workers scurried about Thursday while Dolphins president and CEO Tom Garfinkel gave a tour of the site.
