AUGUSTA (AP) — Central Maine Power Co. is warning its customers to be aware of a scam in which someone calls pretending to be a collections agent and demands power bill payment over the phone.
The utility says the caller tells customers to deposit cash or a money order into bogus accounts through convenience store cash transfer systems. Others have been instructed to call a number and provide personal financial information to settle a bill.
The scammer has been targeting mostly small businesses and restaurants in the Lewiston, Portland and Augusta areas.
Central Maine Power says the utility would never call a customer to demand payment in that manner.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
