An air quality alert is in effect from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. today.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection issued the alert for coastal Cumberland, coastal Waldo, coastal York, Knox Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties.

Poor air quality is likely to continue into Thursday for the entire coastline, the state said.

Individuals are advised to consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, the elderly and those with pre-existing respiratory problems, such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician.

A toll-free air quality hotline has been established so Maine residents can stay informed on the air quality situations. The toll free number is: 1-800-223-1196.
