RICHMOND — Robert Lee Grogan, age 83, passed away unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm at Mid Coast Hospital on Monday, July 27, 2015, surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 18, 1932 in Bluefield, Virginia to Malcom Hagan Grogan and Hazel Belle (Dingus) Grogan. His deceased siblings are Geneva A. Begley, Francis M Begley, and Donald Hagan Grogan.

Robert joined the service at a very early age, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Campaigns. He dedicated his life to the Army for 27 years. Upon his retirement from the Army, he then worked for the V.A. across the United States for 20 years and retired as Chief of Staff at Togus in Augusta, Maine. His last work venture was working as a veterans’ counselor with the State of Maine D.A.V. program.

Robert is survived by his wife of many years, Deborah Ann, of Richmond; his two daughters, Elizabeth A. Grogan Strout & her husband, Nicholas K. Strout, and their children Sable Olivia, Kade Robert, Saige Lindsy and Ford Hagan Strout, of Richmond and his youngest daughter, Emily Ann Grogan Marlowe, and her daughters Kaela Ann and Corinne Ashley Marlowe, also of Richmond; and his son, Richard Lee Ramsey & his wife, Pamela D., and their daughters Emily Christine and Julia Lee Ramsey, of Melbourne, FL.

Robert’s favorite thing of all was having family gatherings with great food and spending time with all the kids and grandkids. He will greatly be remembered for his sense of humor and amazing generosity towards all of the people he loved and cared about.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 11 a.m. – noon on Tuesday, August 4th at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of Robert’s life will be following the visitation at 12:00noon. A committal service with full military honors will be at 1 p.m. at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
