TOPSHAM — The public will get a chance to learn about the Common Core State Standards and what those standards will look like within School Administrative District 75 during a meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Williams-Cone School.
The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and mathematics describe what students in Maine should know and be able to do in these to content areas. School officials will describe the standards during the hour-long event and give examples of how they are being used in schools in SAD 75.
Fully implemented in the 2013-14 school year, the Maine Department of Education website states that the undated standards “emphasize more complex content and concepts and the development of needed real-world skills like problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking and communication — imperative for Maine students to succeed and our state to thrive. How Maine educators go about helping students meet and exceed those standards — including curriculum, required reading or school operations — remains entirely a local decision.”
Williams-Cone School is located at 19 Perkins St., in Topsham. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/msad75sta ndards.
