PORTLAND — Beth Baird, an avid literary arts collector and local ephemera dealer, will present a Center for Book Arts workshop on the construction of cobweb Valentines on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the university events room located on the seventh floor of the University of Southern Maine’s Glickman Family Library. The workshop fee is $65. Advance registration is required and can be done by calling 780-5900.

Cobweb Valentines date from the Victorian era and are three-dimensional, paper-cut cards that create a heart within a heart design. They are easy to make but require some patience. Baird will be displaying some of her own creations and findings to inspire the class. She also will be teaching the Victorian Puzzle (paper) Purse, a paper art similar to origami, that also can be used for Valentine giving.

Participants should bring an X-Acto knife with additional blades, self-healing cutting mat, ruler, pencil and any collage materials (photos or ephemera) to incorporate into their design. Above all, Baird wants to stress the fun and engaging environment she hopes will culminate from participation in this workshop.
